‘No! Not Larry Summers!’ Wails Devastated Nation

WASHINGTON—Responding to recent revelations suggesting the prominent economist was a close associate of the late child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, a devastated nation reportedly joined together to wail “No! Not Larry Summers!” on Thursday. “Oh please God, not Bill Clinton’s treasury secretary Larry Summers!” said visibly distraught Iowa resident Carrie Pritchard, who echoed the sentiment of all 340 million Americans upon seeing multiple emails that showed the former Harvard University president had regularly corresponded with Epstein. “I feel so lost! Who am I supposed to turn to for insight on the role of regulation in the derivatives market now? It must be some kind of mistake. Are we sure the emails weren’t from someone with a similar name? I just can’t believe a man who was once a leader at the World Bank would do something so terrible.” According to reports, the nation was soon dealt another unimaginable blow when additional emails revealed billionaire Peter Thiel had also corresponded with Epstein.

Rosetta stone will mark something wrong if you don't use the right punctuation (in French, you need to put a space between the end of your sentence and, say, a question mark) and not tell you why.

FIFA announces creation of new highly prestigious peace prize

Double checked to make sure this was real (or “real”) before posting. It is (or “is”)”

FIFA has announced the creation of a peace prize, which it plans to award at the draw for the World Cup on Dec. 5 in Washington.

The award, called the FIFA Peace Prize, will “recognize exceptional actions for peace,” soccer’s governing body said Wednesday.

“In an increasingly unsettled and divided world, it’s fundamental to recognize the outstanding contribution of those who work hard to end conflicts and bring people together in a spirit of peace,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said.

FIFA said the award, which Infantino will present this year, will be bestowed annually “on behalf of fans from all around the world.”

Can you bet on the potential winner? I mean I have a wild guess but I don’t want to affect the betting pool by announcing it ahead of time.

ASCII Automata

I will readily admit that I don't really know what's happening on the ASCII Automata site. There are a great deal of options to configure, a map of some sort to click around on and absolutely zero instructions. Fortunately, you don't really need them. Click on the grid and something draws. Reset, change some things, try again. At the very least, be sure to change the "font" in the top left - wildly different results based on the options chosen there.

Sort of like staring at a cloud, you really start to see some interesting structures and compositions emerge through the randomness.

The tool / art experiment is by Heikki Lotvonen, who has a great deal of other projects also worth perusing.

Shop Secondhand Like a Pro: How Two Style Experts Thrift a Versatile Look for $250

Thrifting and vintage shopping have been growing faster than the broader retail industry, with few signs of slowing down. There’s the sustainability element of it, sure, but shopping secondhand for clothing is also a way to experiment with personal style and find items that are unique to you.

To see what that looks like in practice (and to learn how to do it well), we asked two of Wirecutter’s style writers, Alexander Aciman and Frances Solá-Santiago, to put together a work-appropriate outfit of three secondhand items — a sweater, a pair of jeans, and a workbag — for $250 each. They were more than up for the challenge.

Alex is a self-proclaimed outfit repeater who has written extensively about jeans, T-shirts, and other menswear basics, so he went out looking for items that would complement his existing wardrobe. “I want each item to be slightly beyond basic, a teensy bit of a reach for me. Secondhand shopping allows me to do that, because weirder items tend to show up on the secondhand market, and those items are cheaper than they would be at retail.”

Frances has been writing about style for the better part of a decade (including authoring two books in the Little Books of Fashion series, focusing on Bottega Veneta and Celine), and she admits to preferring vintage shopping or thrifting over buying new. “This is especially true when it comes to vintage designer fashion, which I’ve started collecting slowly,” she says. But embarking on this journey, she was a bit cautious. “The budget is tight, especially because jeans, sweaters, and handbags are some of the priciest categories out there. Even secondhand!”

Here’s what they ended up buying, along with some in-depth advice to help you build out your own wardrobe with pieces you’ll treasure for years to come.
